Indiana Busted Mugshots Online

Several state and county systems let you search for busted mugshots in Indiana without going to a courthouse. The Indiana State Police runs the Criminal History Services division. They handle Limited Criminal History searches that cover felonies and Class A misdemeanor arrests in Indiana. A Limited Criminal History report is based on a name, date of birth, race, and gender. If needed, a Social Security Number can help narrow the results. The cost is $15 per record for subscribers or $15.70 if you pay by credit card. Money orders only for mail requests, made out to State of Indiana.

The Limited Criminal History Online Portal is where you run these searches. Results come back as a PDF that stays active for 14 days. Three outcomes are possible. "ON FILE" means a criminal record was found. "INCONCLUSIVE RESULTS" means more info is needed. "NO RECORDS FOUND" is the result when nothing matches. All searches count as a completed request. You pay the fee whether or not a record turns up.

The Indiana State Police put it this way: "A Limited Criminal History report contains only felonies and misdemeanor arrests within the State of Indiana." It won't show arrests from other states. For mail requests, send to Indiana State Police, Criminal History Limited Check, P.O. Box 6188, Indianapolis, IN 46206-6188.

How to Find Busted Mugshots in Indiana

Start with the county sheriff's website. Most Indiana counties have a sheriff office that keeps an inmate list or jail roster on their site. Some use third-party systems like ISOMS or JailTracker to manage the data. Allen County lets you search inmates by first name, last name, or booking date through their inmate search page. Marion County has a full inmate lookup tool at inmateinfo.indy.gov where you can search by name, date of birth, booking number, permanent number, state ID, county ID, or FBI and ICE numbers. Hamilton County posts inmate information on the HCSO justice center services page.

Not every county has online tools. For those without them, call the sheriff's office or go to the jail in person. The jail booking desk can tell you if someone is in custody. The Indiana Judicial Branch also offers access to court documents, protection orders, and other public records through its portal. Under IC 5-14-3, the Access to Public Records Act, Indiana residents have the right to inspect and copy public records held by government agencies.

Indiana Booking Photos and Public Records Law

Indiana's Access to Public Records Act, found at IC 5-14-3, gives every person the right to access information about the government and the official acts of public employees. This law covers arrest records and booking photos held by county jails and sheriff offices. All records that are not excepted from disclosure must be made available for public inspection and copying. Under IC 5-14-3-4, some records may be confidential or left to the discretion of the public agency. Investigatory records of law enforcement can fall in this group, which means some booking photo requests depend on what the agency decides to release.

The Indiana Public Access Counselor put out a document called "Public Access to Warrants and Mug Shots" that goes into the details. You can read it at in.gov/pac. It explains when busted mugshots must be released and when an agency can hold them back. In most cases, if a person is arrested or summoned for an offense, certain facts about the arrest must be made available for inspection and copying. Confidential records include things like adoption files, patient medical records, and trade secrets.

For Marion County, the Indianapolis public records request portal processes APRA requests. The city must respond to verbal or in-person requests within 24 hours. Written requests get a 7-day response window. Copies cost 4 cents per page. You can email Contact.MCSO@indy.gov or call the Marion County Sheriff at 317-327-1700 for arrest record requests.
